Our Journey
Hi, i’m Matthew, the creator of An Actors Notion 👋
How did all this begin…
I studied at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama: BA Acting and graduated in 2014. I was fortunate enough to step right into ‘War Horse’ in the West End, where I spent a year learning from seasoned actors.
One key lesson I took away from them, is that the industry doesn’t necessarily get easier over time you just get better at navigating the challenges.
Now, after working consistently in the industry for over 10 years, I can confirm this is true. I’m still a freelancer, still hustling, but something has changed for me…
I’ve always been interested in process and whilst my acting process felt easy to understand and develop, the ‘business’ side felt insurmountable.
I had a clunky excel spreadsheet listing my auditions, contacts etc that slowed me down every time I tried to look for information. Lots of noise, lots of wasted time.
There wasn't anything out there that fulfilled what I was missing, so I started to build my own system.
For years I’ve been building and tweaking what has now become ‘An Actors Notion.’
I have a clear database for all my auditions, creative teams, and industry contacts.
I can now easily spot patterns and opportunities, look up pervious correspondence with potential Contacts (without trawling through Gmail) the database will even tells me when to reach out to people I haven’t spoken to in a while.
It’s taken all of the stress of the industry away from me, leaving me free to focus on the artistic side.
So much of our industry feels like you have to pay for expensive platforms and then wait, hoping that someone reaches out to you.
I wanted to build something that was low cost that put the power back in my hands.
The an Actors Notion system gives me autonomy. I now feel confident reaching out to people, mailing invites and walk into auditions prepared and confident, focusing on my creative journey, rather than feeling like I’m in the dark.
I hope you like what you find on our ‘Tools’ page and that it inspires other actors to take charge of their journeys, too!
Break a leg,
Matthew
